Red drum, also called channel bass, redfish, or spot tail bass, is a game fish found in the Atlantic Ocean from Massachusetts to Florida, and in the Gulf of Mexico from Florida to northern Mexico. It is the only species in the genus Sciaenops. The red drum is a member of the drum family, Sciaenidae, and is the only species in the genus Sciaenops.

The drum family includes weakfish, croakers, and corbina. The red drum is a relatively large fish. Adults can grow to a length of just over four feet and a weight of up to fifty pounds, although fish of this size are rare.

The record for the largest red drum is ninety-six pounds, fourteen ounces, and was caught off the coast of North Carolina in 1984. Red drum typically live for about twenty-five years. <\/p>\n \n
