A cup of sugar is a common measurement in recipes, but how much does that actually weigh? The answer may surprise you. One cup of granulated sugar weighs around 200 grams.

That\u2019s equivalent to about 7 ounces or \u00bc pound. But not all types of sugar weigh the same. For example, 1 cup of packed brown sugar weighs 210 grams, while 1 cup of powdered sugar weighs only 120 grams.<\/p>\n \n

The American Heart Association recommends that women consume no more than 6 teaspoons (24 grams) of added sugar per day, and men consume no more than 9 teaspoons (36 grams). Yet the average American consumes about 22 teaspoons (88 grams) of added sugar every day!\n\nSo what does this amount of sugar look like?

Let\u2019s say you have a cup of coffee with two tablespoons of milk and one tablespoon of sugar. That\u2019s already almost 10 grams of sugar right there. A can of soda has about 40 grams of sugar, while a single serving of many popular breakfast cereals has upwards of 20 grams.

Even so-called \u201chealthy\u201d snacks like granola bars or fruit yogurt can be loaded with hidden sugars.\n\nThe bottom line is that we need to be aware of how much added sugars we are consuming each day. <\/p>\n \n
