How Do You Reupholster a Retro Vinyl Chair?
Assuming you have a basic understanding of how to sew and use power tools, reupholstering a retro vinyl chair is not as difficult as it may seem. The following steps provide a general overview of how to reupholster a retro vinyl chair:
1. Remove the old upholstery from the chair.
This can be done by carefully cutting away the fabric with a sharp knife or utility blade, being careful not to damage the underlying vinyl. Once the fabric is removed, unscrew any staples or tacks holding the upholstery in place.
2. Clean the chair thoroughly, paying special attention to any areas where the old upholstery was attached.
This will ensure that your new upholstery will adhere properly and last for many years to come.
3. Cut your new fabric to size, allowing for approximately two inches of excess on all sides. If you are using patterned fabric, be sure to center the design on each panel so that it will look balanced when finished.
4. Attach the new fabric to the chair using either staples or tacks, taking care to pull it taunt but not too tight before securing in place. Trim away any excess fabric, then replace any foam padding that may have been removed during Step 1.
5 That’s it!
How Do You Reupholster a Chair Seat With Vinyl?
Assuming you would like a step-by-step guide on how to reupholster a chair seat with vinyl:
Materials needed:
-1/2 yard of medium weight decorator fabric or upholstery vinyl
-High density foam 2″ to 4″ thick (depending on the depth of your seat)
-Scissors
-Staple gun and staples
-Upholstery tacks (optional)
Instructions:
1. Remove the old seat from the chair frame.
If it is attached with screws, simply unscrew them. If it is attached with upholstery tacks, use a tack puller or pliers to remove them. Be careful not to damage the wood as you remove the old seat.
2. Cut a piece of high density foam to fit snugly inside the seat frame. Place it inside and center it in the frame. It should be level with or slightly below the top edge of the frame so that when you staple/tack the new fabric in place, it will be flush with or slightly above the top edge of the frame all around.
You may need to add or remove foam until you get just the right fit and height. 3. Wrap one long side and one short side of fabric around two sides of foam, making sure that pattern pieces are facing out (away from each other), then staple/tack into place on underside of seat frame about every 6″. Repeat for remaining two sides, wrapping fabric smoothly around corners without pleats or gathers; trim away excess fabric leaving about 1″ extra all around for final adjusting later if needed; finish stapling/tacking all four sides into place securely but not too tightly (fabric should still have some “give”). 4 4 .
Trim away any excess batting/foam even with edges of wood base; cover any raw wood edges with matching bias binding tape if desired for finished look; reattach newly upholstered seat onto chair using original hardware if possible OR by screwing through front bottom edge into legs at least 2″ deep for stability (do NOT just screw through top surface only).
How Do You Reupholster Vinyl Stools?
Assuming you would like a step by step guide on how to reupholster vinyl stools:
Tools needed:
-Staple gun
-1/4 inch staples
-Hammer
-Pry bar
-Rotary cutter
-Self healing cutting mat
-Upholstery scissors
-Tape measure
Materials needed:
-(1) Yard of 54” wide fabric or less depending on the size of your stools (you can always buy more fabric if you need it!) I bought mine for $7 a yard at Joanns.
You could probably get it cheaper elsewhere. -Spray adhesive -Thread to match your fabric -Piping (optional) I didn’t use any on mine, but it does give them a nice finished look! You can buy this by the yard at most fabric stores.
-Batting or foam padding (I used 1” thick batting)
Instructions: 1) First things first, take your measurements! You will need to know how tall and wide your stools are so you can cut your fabric accordingly.
Also, measure the circumference of each stool leg. Mine were about 3” in diameter. 2) Cut 4 pieces of fabric for each stool using these dimensions: Seat – Taller measurement x Wider measurement + 6” Skirt – Same width as seat x Length around leg + 6” 3) Next, lay out two skirting pieces right sides together and stitch along the long side with a ½” seam allowance. Repeat with remaining two skirting pieces. Then, do the same thing with the seat pieces. Now you should have two big “ tubes” of fabric, one for the skirt and one for the seat. 4) Turn both tubes right side out and press flat with seams running down the center of each side. 5) Spray one side of each tube lightly with spray adhesive then place batting on top and smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles. Trim off excess batting close to edge of fabric then fold raw edge over twice about ¼”and press flat again.(This creates a clean finish on the inside edge of your stools when they are done).
